Horizontal openings with naturale ventilation

Postby leone977 » Tue Mar 29, 2011 8:51 am

The problem of lack of accuracy in modelling natural ventilation in buildings where horizontal openings are involved is still existing? If yes will be solved?
Thanks

Hi Leone,

Yes this issue has now been resolved in the current v2 release. Recent versions of EnergyPlus have a special horizontal opening which is used by DesignBuilder for internal holes in floors.

in this case an atrium made of multiple zones piled up and connected by holes on the ceiling/floor will be simulated in a correct way?

thanks

Yes from the airflow point of view it will be simulated correctly. You should also consider whether you need solar radiation to penetrate right down to the bottom of the layers of zones though. There is a limitation in EnergyPlus where solar radiation can only pass through one set of interior 'windows' (or holes in your case). if you do need this then you should consider using a single zone and applying a temperature gradient.
