Kiva Foundation Example Cases

The examples below provide details on how to set up Kiva Foundations for some common cases.

Raft Slab

This example shows how to model a simple raft slab case.

  1. The main slab including any continuous insulation layer is modelled within the ground floor construction element.

  2. There is no above grade footing wall so Wall height above grade is set to zero.

  3. In this example the raft beam extends 0.2m below the base of the slab so the Wall depth below slab should be entered 0.2m.

  4. The footing wall construction thickness defines the width of the footing wall.

  5. There is no foundation footing in this example.

Foundation Footings

In this example we will be modelling a traditional foundation with footing without any additional perimeter insulation. The top of the slab is level with the ground level.

  1. The main slab, including its insulation, is modelled within the ground floor construction element.

  2. Because the top of the slab is level with the top of the ground, the Wall height above grade is set to zero.

  3. The footing wall extends below the base of the slab by 0.5m so the Wall depth below slab should be entered as 0.5m.

  4. The footing wall construction thickness defines the width of the footing wall.

  5. As there is additional concrete foundation footing below the footing wall, its details are defined separately with Footing width and Footing depth set to 0.5m and 0.2m respectively.

Slab-on-Grade Foundation with Additional Perimeter Insulation

In this example there is a slab with continuous insulation, and additional perimeter insulation elements, and a footing wall. Firstly, the continuous insulation will be modelled in the slab construction and will not there appear in the foundation data.

  1. There is 0.5m of interior horizonal insulation around the perimeter of the foundation. It is measured from wall interior to the edge of insulation and is defined in the model by entering the Interior horizonal insulation Width as 0.5m.

  2. The interior horizontal insulation is positioned directly below the slab and so the Depth is entered as 0.

  3. There is also 0.25m depth of Interior vertical insulation around the perimeter of the foundation. It is measured from the top of wall to the edge of the insulation. So enter 0.25m as the Interior vertical insulation Depth.

  4. The top of the footing wall is 0.2m above grade as the slab is on grade and goes into the ground, therefore the Wall height above grade should be entered as 0.2m.

  5. The footing wall extends below the base of the slab by 0.5m so the Wall depth below slab should be entered as 0.5m.

  6. The footing wall construction thickness defines the width of the footing wall.

  7. There is no foundation footing in this example.
